My Creative History
With a 25-year history in the creative industry, I began my journey studying art and design at college and university. Initially employed as a graphic designer, I transitioned to freelancing while nurturing a passion for drawing and painting, particularly in portraiture.
As interest in my artwork grew, I shifted focus from design to full-time portrait artistry. Inspired by cultural icons from music and film, I developed a series of acrylic portraits in a distinctive Pop Art style. My inaugural solo exhibition, "About Face," was held in 2005 at Amoeba Gallery in Clifton, Bristol, and met with great success. This achievement led me to establish "Cut the Mustard," a traveling art gallery.
For the next 13 years, I dedicated autumn and winter to painting, and during spring and summer, I toured with "Cut the Mustard," showcasing my work at various music festivals, including Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, VFest, Reading Festival and many more. During this period, I also completed numerous private portrait commissions.
In 2017, a persistent back issue prompted me to reconsider the physically demanding festival circuit. This turning point inspired me to explore new subjects and mediums. Drawing inspiration from my surroundings in Clevedon, my picturesque seaside hometown, I began creating ink drawings of local scenes and evolving my portrait style.
This new direction was well-received, allowing me to refine a unique and recognisable artistic style. Today, my work is available through several galleries, shops, and my website.
My Current Work
My inspiration is drawn from people, places, and nature, often intertwining these elements. Influenced by diverse sources, my current style reflects environments, contours, subcultures, expression, and a touch of humour. In addition to creating pieces for general release, I undertake private commissions and engage in various commercial illustration projects.
Artists who have profoundly influenced me include M.C. Escher, William Hogarth, Brian Bolland, Eric Fischl, Mode2, Charles Griffin, Rodney Matthews, and Barney Farmer, among others.
My creative process involves hand-drawing, with colouring done either in ink or digitally via Photoshop using a drawing pad and pen.
In 2024, I was honoured to be voted Clevedon Artist of the Year by the public, in conjunction with Polodango Art Gallery.
I have as number of shows coming up in 2025, join my mailing list and follow my social media accounts for details. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I do creating it!
